Happy Spring!

Oh my apple pie!
How is it already
April?

A lot has happened
since November!

I finished my
Master's Degree,
I had surgery,
and I
changed jobs.

No more swing shift!

But that's ok, I'll
still be Swing Shift Mama!
Mostly because
I like how it sounds!

I have lots
planned for this blog
and spring is the time
for new
beginnings!

I am going to start
posting more
regularly,
but probably
less frequently.

See you all soon!

Friday Fun With the Little One - Christmas Decorating

Around my house
we have kicked Christmas
into high gear!

treelit1
The decorations are almost all up
and tomorrow we will try
decorating gingerbread houses
for the first time ever!
I am excited...
and slightly frightened.

We set up our Christmas tree
on Thanksgiving weekend
and I believe it is my little one's
absolutely most favorite part
about Christmas decorating.

tree2

She loves to help Daddy set up the tree,
to see all the ornaments,
and hang them all up.

tree3

After that,
it is Mommy's job to rehang them
or else all our ornaments
would be all clumped together
in one spot.

We keep our Christmas tree very simple,
mostly for economic and pet reasons.
But I like it that way.
There is beauty in simplicity!

The other thing we do early
is set up my nutcrackers.
My little one just loves
the nutcrackers.
She knows when they come out,
Christmas is officially here!

nc3

When I was little,
my aunt decided my sister
and I needed to collect something.
She tried everything:
bears, ducks, snowglobes.
None of them really stuck.
Until she got me my first nutcracker.

nc1

We went to see
The Nutcracker Ballet
every year at Christmas
and I just loved the ballerinas.
I danced and played with that nutcracker
for months until he was safely stored
(after loosing a nose, shoe, and his hat coming off)
in the hutch.
The next year,
I got a new nutcracker...
and it just progressed from there.

nc4

Now I have over three dozen nutcrackers.
Some have stories and sentimental value
and others are simple additions to the collection.
I love each and every single one of them.

This is the first year
I set up our manger scene
with my little one.
It is just a small one
my mother got me for my
first apartment.
I will not get another one
until I can afford the specific
one I want,
so this one has to do.
I told her the story of Christmas,
but she was more concerned with
the sheep.

Stuffed Acorn Squash

This is not the post
I had planned for today.
I had planned to finish up my
new wall art and
share it with you all.

But then...
tragedy struck!

I LOST my mod podge!

That's right.
It's gone.
Can't find it.

So you get the post that
has just been waiting for
a time to shine.
And it should really shine.
Because it was really good.
And easy!

And who doesn't like
easy?

I really enjoy recipe sites.
I feel like there should be
some anonymous meeting
I go to where I stand up and say,
"Hi, my name is Kelli and
I am a recipe-site-a-holic."
Everyone will say "Hi Kelli,"
and I will be among friends
who understand my addiction.
Hopefully, someone will understand my pain, too.
You see, while I am becoming more adventurous
and have integrated some ingredients,
like chopped garlic,
into my regular pantry stores,
I still am either unable
or afraid to try certain crazy ingredients,
like lentils, capers, etc.
In addition,
I am not a big fan of nuts mixed into anything
but...well...mixed nuts.
Breads shouldn't crunch.
Brownies shouldn't crunch.
Nuts shouldn't be too soft.
Oh, and did I mention my husband is
not a big fan of dried fruits?

Imagine my dismay
when my excitement about this recipe
became distorted when
I read the ingredient list.
Really?
Lentils, nuts, and
dried cranberries all in one recipe?
But it sounded so yummy!

And it was!

Once I adapted it to our
family's interests, likes, and budget.

Slow Cooker Stuffed Acorn Squash

Once rice is tender,
combine in large frying pan
with sugared sausage
and stir until everything is coated.
Turn off heat.

Stuff sausage-rice mixture into
acorn squash halves and
place in slow cooker crock.

Add about 3/4" water to crock.

Syrup
Pour 1/2 cup pancake syrup
evenly over the two halves.

Some Kind of Wonderful Saturday

I had fully intended to post my
Thanksgiving Stuffing recipe
on Thursday.
I would take pictures
as I made the stuffing Wednesday evening
and Thursday morning
and post the recipe
before I head to my in-laws
to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Unfortunately,
health issues got in the way of my plans
and instead of taking pictures
of the world's easiest and
most heart-warming stuffing
on Wednesday,
I spent the day
hooked to I.V.s
in the E.R.
No worries,
all the tests came back clean
and all is back to normal.
But,
alas,
there was no stuffing.
There was pain medications
and over sleeping instead.
It is one heck of a way
to celebrate the holiday!
I really don't recommend it.

Putting that behind us.
After Thanksgiving comes
Christmas
WOO HOO!

I love Christmas.
No,
it's not my favorite holiday,
but it is in the top three!
And a small child around the house
makes the season that much more
merry and bright!

Oh my
apple pie!
I have quite a bit
to share with you this time
around!

First, I just stumbled across this
and wanted to share it with everyone!

I try to make most of my Christmas Gifts.

What a great clay recipe!

Speaking of non-toxic

there is nothing

to tell you it is the holidays.
Mommy's Kitchen

I cannot wait to
do this!
They are on

Talk About Town - Glendale Cemetery

There are unique places in all our towns.
We are lucky to have so many incredible sights
and activities within a day's drive of our little city.
I am going to share some with you
and I would love to see some of yours!

Glendale Cemetery was the
first chartered cemetery in Ohio
and the third in the nation.
It is set into the hills of the Cuyahoga Valley
with Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Gothic influences.
The scenery is not only beautiful,
but serene and calm.

I know a cemetery may seem
like a strange place to start,
but this one is a landmark around here.

Hope you enjoy my little tour
through the stunning scenery.

Friday Fun with the Little One - Christmas Kick Off

Every year,
I take my little one
to the local high school's
yearly craft show
to kick off our holiday season.
This year,
we were lucky enough
to have my mom and niece
join us.

I love craft shows!
They give you so many creative ideas
and unique gifts to purchase for people.
This particular show is gigantic
and filled with talented people!
To top it off,
the church next door has a craft show
at the same time
and, in addition to the amazing crafts,
they also serve some of the
best cabbage rolls in town.

lunchatshow

singingwithgma

We enjoyed our lunch there,
bought several gifts
and I purchased the last of the
most amazing pumpkin pie fudge
I have ever tasted!
Little one had some and
said it tasted just like pudding!

We left my mother
at the church for service
while the little ones and I
ran to the grocery store
to get the supplies
to make acorns.

Let me tell you something about
the wonderful acorns I posted last Saturday.

Nutter Butters are expensive!
Like crazy,
gave me a heart attack in the middle of the store,
expensive!

So I got Ritz Bitz with peanut butter.
As they were much smaller,
they were more difficult to work with.
Add in the four and five year old helping me
and our acorns ended up looking like...

acorns

On a plus side,
they were insanely yummy
and we discovered a new treat
to add in our annual cookie boxes.

I'll share that with you some other time.

We picked up my mother,
headed out for some dinner,
and then took the girls to paint pottery.

If you live in the Akron area
and have never been to All Fired Up,
I recommend you go.
Not only do they have the
best set up for small children
(by best set up I mean paper on all the tables,
very heavy jars of water,
thousands of brushes
and a sign that even says to
let small children be artistic
however they want to be artistic,
even if that means they end up
with a rainbow hippo),
but their price includes everything!

paintingthebowl

We painted plates
last year for Christmas
at another store
and ended up paying significantly more
because we had to pay for every little thing
separately.

In addition,
there was only so many times
I could walk my then three year old
around the outlets
waiting for a coat to dry
so we could put on another one.

Apainting

All Fired up does all the top glazing for you!
They also have other options
including glass and clay projects.
But the kids had a
blast with the pottery!

The best part was,
when the kids were done
and cleaning up,
the people there were playing with them.

It is such a kid friendly environment!
They definitely have a customer for life in me!

That was our holiday season kick off!
How do you kick of your holiday season?

The opinions expressed above are my own and
no form of compensation was received for them.
